Letterbooks of Marcus Morton (1784-1864), former governor of Massachusetts and Collector of Customs in Boston (1845-1849), contain letters regarding the appointments for positions of postmasters and customs officials; letters to U.S. and Mass. politicians regarding national and state politics, the state and national Democratic and Free-Soil parties; and U.S. elections, in particular the presidential election of 1848. Morton's correspondents include George Bancroft, R.J. Walker, David Henshaw, Cave Johnson, and Benjamin Tappan.
